What I'm aiming for is the Pi sits there with the clients machines loading up Pidgin and being able to text to one another across the LAN without fuss. Ideally it would be something that works with various flavours of Linux and Windows 10, though I can live without Windows as long as Manjaro and Mint users can talk to each other.
I have a Pi 3B+ and was wondering if anyone can recommend a simple way to set up an IM server on it. We also have had some Internet fluctuations in our area recently so being able to communicate across the home when it's down would be useful. Unfortunately more and more of these services have died off recently and the one or two I do use tend to be unreliable in terms of uptime. So, I am one of those dinosaurs that likes to use ye olde Instant Messengers for chatting back and forth with people using IMs like it's 1999 and ICQ is still a thing.
